The top of a tall wardrobe is easy to forget

Tall wardrobes often reach close to the ceiling, leaving a flat surface on top that is completely out of sight from normal standing height. Because nobody sees this surface during an ordinary day, it becomes one of the easiest places in the whole bedroom to forget entirely, sometimes for months at a stretch.

Dust settles evenly across this hidden surface, undisturbed by foot traffic or regular cleaning, and can build into a surprisingly thick layer over time. Items sometimes stored up there, such as spare bedding or boxes, only make matters worse, since dust collects around them just as it would on any other neglected shelf.

Reaching the top safely

A sturdy step stool makes this job far easier and safer than trying to reach up blindly with an outstretched arm. Once at the right height, a cloth or a long-handled duster clears the surface quickly, working from the back of the wardrobe towards the front so nothing gets missed.

Any stored items should be lifted down first so the whole surface can be wiped properly, rather than dusted around. This is also a useful moment to check whether everything kept up there is still worth keeping, since it is rarely looked at closely otherwise.

The front edge of the wardrobe top deserves particular attention, as it tends to be the part most visible from below once a light catches it at the right angle. A quick pass along this edge often makes the biggest visible difference for the least effort.

Doing this once or twice a year, rather than waiting for the dust to become obvious, keeps the top of the wardrobe from turning into a bigger job later on. It is a small task that is easy to forget, but quick to sort out once the step stool is out.
